Physical quantities and units
Use SI base units and check equations for homogeneity. Express values with appropriate significant figures and prefixes (pico to tera).

Define displacement, velocity and acceleration as vectors. Use the four uniform-acceleration (SUVAT) equations.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceState and apply Newton's three laws of motion. Use F = ma for single bodies and connected systems.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine and calculate the moment of a force and the torque of a couple. Apply the principle of moments with forces at angles.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine work done: W = Fs cos θ for force at angle θ to displacement. Derive and use KE = ½mv² from the equations of motion.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDistinguish elastic and plastic deformation; identify the elastic limit. Define stress, strain and the Young modulus.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceCalculate density and the weight of displaced fluid. Separate upthrust from viscous drag.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine the radian; convert between degrees and radians. Define angular velocity ω; relate it to period and speed: v = rω.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceUse Newton's law of gravitation: F = GMm/r². Define gravitational field strength g = F/m; use g = GM/r².
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine simple harmonic motion: a = −ω²x. Use x = x₀ sin ωt, v = ±ω√(x₀² − x²), and v_max = ωx₀.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceUse Coulomb's law: F = Qq ÷ 4πε₀r². Define electric field strength E = F/Q; use E = Q ÷ 4πε₀r² for point charges.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine capacitance C = Q/V for capacitors and isolated conductors. Derive and use the energy stored: W = ½QV = ½CV².
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine magnetic flux density B from F = BIL; the tesla. Use F = BIL sin θ for a current-carrying conductor.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceDefine magnetic flux Φ = BA and flux linkage NΦ; the weber. State and use Faraday's law: induced e.m.f. = rate of change of flux linkage.
Illustrated explanations · Worked practiceRead a general explanation first, then check the guide for your board and qualification. Each path connects course choices, study methods and practical next steps.
Start with general course choices, then follow the Edexcel International AS route for Units 1–3.
YPH11: connect AS foundations, A2 models, practical skills and qualification grading.
These notes target Pearson Edexcel International AS and A-Level Physics (XPH11/YPH11). Use the AS and A2 filters to navigate the course. Practical skills for WPH13 and WPH16 also need dedicated preparation. The library is a revision companion, not a line-by-line syllabus checklist.
Not sure of your exam board?Questions
Choose a question for a direct answer, then explore the explanation and supporting resources. Each answer has its own link to save or share.
Use your exam entry and current teaching plan to identify the units you need, then use the library's stage filters. AS develops foundations such as mechanics, materials, waves and electricity. A2 extends the course into topics including fields, oscillations and nuclear Physics; earlier ideas remain useful throughout.
Notes explain the models and methods, but you also need independent calculations, written reasoning, practical analysis and timed questions from your board. After each topic, test whether you can choose a method in a new situation and explain why it applies, rather than only reproduce a worked example.
