AS vs A-Level Physics: what is the difference, and does AS count?
A student can be told both 'AS is half your A-Level' and 'AS does not count towards A-Level', then understandably wonder which statement is correct. The missing information is the qualification system. Advice about a UK linear course can be wrong for an international modular one, even when both use the Edexcel name.
This guide separates the terminology from the decisions you need to make. It is especially useful before choosing exam entries, stopping after AS or moving between schools. Separate the stage of study from the award
AS means Advanced Subsidiary. A full A-Level includes a broader and more demanding body of work. A2 is commonly used to describe the later stage of an A-Level course; it should not be assumed to mean a standalone full qualification. The useful question is what your registered course awards and which assessment results are included in that award.
Write the exact names from your school documents rather than shortening everything to 'Physics'. Keep four separate fields: the awarding body, qualification code, papers or units entered, and intended qualification award. This small record makes conversations with the exams officer much clearer than asking whether you are 'doing AS or A2'.
For Edexcel IAL, the IAS units are part of the full qualification
Under the 2018 Edexcel International Physics specification, International AS uses Units 1, 2 and 3. The full International A-Level adds Units 4, 5 and 6. IAS uses the code XPH11 and the full IAL uses YPH11. Unit results and the overall award are connected through Pearson's qualification reporting process, so make sure your centre understands which award you intend to receive.
For planning purposes, keep confirmed results distinct from practice scores. A mock raw mark is useful feedback, but it is not an awarded unit result. If you are thinking of retaking a unit or combining results from different sittings, ask the centre to check your record and current rules before you pay for entries. Do not infer eligibility from a friend's timetable.
For UK Edexcel, AS content overlaps but the assessment is separate
In the UK Edexcel route, studying AS content can prepare you for part of A-Level, but an AS mark is not carried into the final 9PH0 grade. A student progressing from AS must still complete the A-Level assessments at the end of the full course. Shared teaching content and shared assessment credit are different things.
This distinction changes how you revise. Material studied early still needs to remain accessible for the later linear assessments. Finishing an AS exam is not a reason to stop revisiting that content. Keep a small mixed-question routine so earlier mechanics, electricity and practical reasoning stay connected to new work.
Cambridge has its own staged-assessment rules
Cambridge International allows different AS and A-Level assessment routes, including staged assessment for applicable syllabuses. Its carry-forward arrangements are not the same as adding Edexcel unit results. A Physics 9702 student should use Cambridge's syllabus and centre guidance for the permitted route and relevant examination series.
If a move between schools also changes the awarding body, stop and request a written assessment plan. Topic overlap may reduce what you need to relearn, but it does not establish that a previous result transfers automatically. Ask which assessments remain, which practical arrangements are needed and what evidence the new centre requires.
Use the decision you face to ask the right question
If you are considering stopping after AS, check whether that award meets your actual next-step requirement. If you want a full A-Level, ask how the remaining content and assessments fit into the time available. If you are worried about an AS grade, examine your question-level errors before assuming that changing route will solve the problem.
Consider an invented example: a student has completed Edexcel IAS and wants to study the later Physics units elsewhere. The first task is to confirm that both centres are discussing the same qualification version and student result record. The learning task is different: test whether the mechanics, graphs and electrical ideas needed for later work are still secure. Administrative continuity and academic readiness both need checking.
Build one route record before building a timetable
Put your confirmed papers, intended award and practical requirements on one page. Add the centre's entry deadlines, which may differ from the awarding body's public dates, and the contact responsible for resolving questions. Once that is confirmed, allocate learning and revision sessions around the assessments you actually need.
Do not turn the route record into a grade prediction. Use it to avoid missing a component or revising the wrong paper. For Edexcel International AS or A2 support, share your unit codes and an attempted question when contacting the academy. That makes it possible to discuss the appropriate group instead of relying on an ambiguous 'A-Level' label.

Does AS Physics count towards my A-Level grade?

Is A2 Physics harder than AS Physics?

Before increasing study hours, identify which AS prerequisites are causing difficulty and repair those alongside the new topic.
Is A2 Physics on its own a full A-Level?
Do not assume that it is. In Edexcel IAL Physics, the full qualification includes both the IAS and IA2 unit sets. 'A2' usually describes the later stage, not permission to omit earlier assessment requirements. Ask your centre which results and qualification entry are required for the full award.
Can I change exam boards after AS Physics?
A change may be possible, but you need confirmation from the receiving centre. Matching topics does not mean that marks or practical evidence automatically transfer. Request a written list of the qualification, remaining assessments, entry requirements and additional content before committing to the change.
