Edexcel A-Level Physics vs International A-Level: which course are you taking?
Two folders can both say 'Edexcel Physics' and contain papers that belong to different courses. The overlap in subject matter makes the mistake difficult to notice: a circuits question may look familiar even when the paper structure and practical requirements are wrong for your entry.
This comparison helps you identify the route, choose suitable study material and ask useful questions before changing course. It does not rank one qualification as automatically easier. Read the code before the title
UK Edexcel A-Level Physics uses 9PH0. The 2018 Edexcel International route uses XPH11 for International AS and YPH11 for the full International A-Level, with Physics unit references WPH11 to WPH16. These identifiers are more reliable than a website category, textbook cover colour or a friend's description of the course.
Find the code on your school's course information or statement of entry. Put it at the top of your resource folder and revision checklist. Then check the intended assessment year and specification version. A paper downloaded from an old course can still contain useful physics, but it should not silently define the current content you plan to cover.
Linear and modular describe the assessment structure
For UK 9PH0, the full qualification is assessed through three written papers at the end of the course, alongside its practical endorsement arrangements. In the 2018 IAL route, the six Physics units are assessed separately. International AS uses the first three units; later units complete the full qualification. Check actual entry options and dates with your centre.
A modular structure can make unit-by-unit planning clearer, but it does not make earlier ideas disposable. Later work can depend on the mechanics, electricity and mathematical reasoning learned earlier. A linear plan needs regular cumulative practice too. In either route, organise learning by concepts and assessed skills, then map that learning onto the correct papers.
Practical assessment is a crucial difference
The UK qualification reports a practical endorsement separately from the examination grade. IAL assesses practical skills through written Units 3 and 6. Written assessment does not mean that practical experience becomes irrelevant: students still need to understand apparatus, measurements, control variables and the connection between a method and its evidence.
Before choosing an online or private-study route, ask exactly how practical learning and any required assessment arrangements will be provided. Do not assume that a set of videos is a practical endorsement, or that a centre accepting one qualification will accept every component of another. Confirm responsibilities with the centre before making entries.
Do not transfer grade calculations between the routes
An IAL unit result and a UK linear paper mark do not play the same role in grade reporting. For example, advice about adding IAL UMS or meeting its A2 requirement for A* should not be applied to 9PH0. Use the official results guidance for the qualification you are actually taking and keep practice raw marks clearly labelled.
The same caution applies to retakes. A friend's ability to re-enter one IAL unit does not establish what is possible or sensible for a different qualification. Ask the exams officer to confirm the entry arrangement, then decide whether the academic benefit justifies the preparation time. Repeatedly calculating hypothetical grades is not a substitute for fixing repeated question errors.
Make a safe resource and course decision
Imagine you are taught IAL but have downloaded a revision pack labelled 'Edexcel Paper 3'. Before studying it, inspect the paper reference. If it is 9PH0/03, use it only where its content is relevant; it is not your WPH13 practical-skills paper. Rename or separate the file so the same confusion does not reappear during timed practice.
When contacting a tutor, provide your qualification code, current unit and the kind of question causing difficulty. When discussing a change of route, confirm the receiving centre's requirements and your intended university course's acceptance directly. A sensible route is one that matches your goals and has a workable teaching, practical and assessment plan, not one chosen from an unsupported claim that its exams are easier.
