IGCSE Physics study guide

Where IGCSE Physics marks are lost.

Four practical checks to make your revision more effective: understand the physics, explain it clearly, practise experimental skills and act on feedback.

01

knowledge is not enough

1 — Check how understanding appears in your answer

Understanding an idea and explaining it clearly are separate tasks. Check for ambiguous definitions, missing units, unconverted quantities and explanations that do not connect the physics to the question. Scientific meaning matters; a correct answer does not always have to copy the mark scheme word for word.

Content coverage and exam execution are different skills. Technique has to be trained through marked past-paper work against the real mark scheme, not assumed to appear once the physics is understood.

practise experimental skills

2 — Prepare practical skills as well as theory

Cambridge Paper 6 asks students to apply experimental skills: plan measurements, identify variables, process data and evaluate methods. Practise recording readings with precision appropriate to the instrument, choosing useful graph scales and drawing a suitable line or curve of best fit. Repeating readings can reduce random uncertainty; it does not correct every source of error.

Rereading theory notes is not enough preparation for this component. Twenty per cent of the Cambridge 0625 Extended grade sits in the practical-skills paper, so students need repeated practice with the procedures and language it actually rewards.

long answers need structure

3 — Give longer answers a clear physical argument

Longer answers need correct physics and a response to the command word. State the relevant principle, explain what happens and connect the reasoning to the situation. The mark allocation helps you judge the detail needed, but it is not a universal rule that six marks require exactly six sentences.

The fix is a writing template as well as secure content: state the relevant physics, explain the mechanism, then link each step to the context in the question.

04

turn feedback into a plan

4 — Use mistakes to choose the next revision task

After marking a practice paper, classify each lost mark: knowledge, method, explanation or checking. Choose a short follow-up task for each pattern, then return to a fresh question to see whether you can apply the correction.

The practical lesson is simple: covering the syllabus is only the first job. Students also need structured feedback on how their knowledge appears under timed, mark-scheme conditions.

Sources and scope

This is a revision guide, not a statistical study. Use the papers and specification for your own board and entry route. Paper 6 is a Cambridge alternative-to-practical component; Edexcel assesses practical skills within its written Physics papers.

Put the guide to work

Read the notes for the topic, complete a timed paper, and classify every dropped mark as knowledge, method, language or checking. That turns a disappointing score into a specific revision list for the next paper.
