From AS to A2: what changes, and how to be ready

By

Every September, students who earned solid AS grades open their first A2 chapter and feel the ground shift. Gravitational fields, simple harmonic motion, capacitance — the words are heavier and nothing can be pictured anymore.

The A2 jump is real, but it is a different kind of jump than students expect. AS to A2 is not more difficult physics. It is more abstract physics — and abstraction responds to procedure.

What actually changes

AS physics lives in the visible world: trolleys, wires, springs, waves in ropes. A2 physics moves to the invisible: fields you cannot see, oscillations described by equations rather than pictures, nuclear processes inferred from evidence. The intuition students leaned on at AS quietly stops working.

The papers change too. A2 questions synthesize — a single question walks through a capacitor, a field, and an energy argument in one continuous chain. Topic-by-topic revision, which worked at AS, leaves students unprepared for questions that refuse to stay in one topic.

The procedure answer

When intuition fails, procedure carries you. Every abstract A2 topic reduces to a small set of repeatable steps — field questions always begin with the field definition and a diagram; SHM questions always begin with identifying the defining equation. My students call this the simplification system: abstract topics, reduced to procedure. It is why A2, which students fear most, is where my groups usually score best.

AS to A2 is not more difficult physics. It is more abstract physics — and abstraction responds to procedure.

How to prepare before September

Secure three AS foundations, because A2 assumes them silently: Newton's laws applied fluently, energy arguments written correctly, and the equation-substitute-solve-check routine automatic. Then, in the first A2 term, resist the urge to 'get the idea' and move on — at A2, the idea is the procedure. Students who write out the standard steps for each new topic own the year; students who nod along to explanations rediscover in January that nodding is not knowing.

And begin synthesis practice early. From the first month, mix past-paper questions across topics. The final papers will — your training should too.
