Edexcel IAS Physics XPH11: Units WPH11 to WPH13
WPH11/01 Mechanics and Materials and WPH12/01 Waves and Electricity are each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks. WPH13/01 Practical Skills in Physics I is a 1-hour-20-minute, 50-mark written examination. Together these three units form the IAS qualification XPH11.
The first two papers require knowledge, calculation and application in unfamiliar contexts. Unit 3 tests experimental procedures and techniques developed through Units 1 and 2, including planning, measurements, data processing, conclusions and evaluation.
Edexcel IAL Physics YPH11: Units WPH14 to WPH16
WPH14/01 Further Mechanics, Fields and Particles and WPH15/01 Thermodynamics, Radiation, Oscillations and Cosmology are each 1 hour 45 minutes and 90 marks. WPH16/01 Practical Skills in Physics II is a 1-hour-20-minute, 50-mark written examination.
Adding WPH14–WPH16 to the IAS units completes the six-unit IAL qualification YPH11. Later units expect students to use earlier mechanics, waves, electricity and practical reasoning, so the teaching plan includes deliberate retrieval rather than waiting for a final full-course revision.
Why Edexcel IAL Physics feels difficult
Students usually meet three problems at once: mathematics that must be physically interpreted, explanations that must use exact relationships, and questions that move a familiar principle into an unfamiliar setting. Memorising a worked solution does not survive that change of context.
Lessons rebuild each result from the physical model, make assumptions visible and train the complete written argument. Past-paper work is selected by skill—modelling, graphs, derivation, estimation or evaluation—not only by topic name.
Preparing for WPH13 and WPH16 practical skills
Units 3 and 6 are written practical-skills papers, not laboratory examinations. Candidates may need to plan an investigation, identify controls, process uncertain data, use graphs, discuss measurement quality and evaluate a method they have not seen in exactly that form.
Preparation connects practical reasoning to the content units that generate it. This prevents the common mistake of learning stock evaluation phrases without being able to explain which measurement is limited, why it matters and how a proposed change improves the result.
How the Edexcel IAL course is taught

What is the difference between Edexcel IAS Physics XPH11 and IAL Physics YPH11?
XPH11 is Edexcel International AS Physics, comprising WPH11, WPH12 and WPH13. YPH11 is the full International A-Level Physics award: those IAS units plus WPH14, WPH15 and WPH16. The full qualification therefore contains six units, with A2 referring to the later stage.
Use award codes to identify the qualification and WPH codes to organise paper preparation. When asking about tuition, name the unit you intend to sit rather than only saying IAL. That makes it possible to discuss the correct group, prerequisites and examination work without confusing first-stage and later-stage content.
Which Edexcel IAL Physics units does Dr Desouky teach?
Dr Desouky teaches all six Edexcel International Physics units, WPH11–WPH16. These cover mechanics and materials, waves and electricity, further mechanics and fields, particles, thermodynamics, radiation, oscillations, cosmology and the two practical-skills units. Keep practical preparation within the overall plan. The content units develop the situations in which measurements and data make sense; Units 3 and 6 assess experimental reasoning in written form. A student who can calculate a value should also be able to explain how the relevant quantities could be measured and which limitations affect the result.
Are WPH13 and WPH16 practical laboratory exams?
No. WPH13 and WPH16 are written practical-skills examinations, each lasting one hour 20 minutes and carrying 50 marks. They test experimental procedures, measurements, planning, data processing, graphs, conclusions and evaluation. A written assessment still requires an understanding of how practical work is carried out.
Avoid learning a stock improvement without identifying its purpose. Increasing a measured interval can reduce a percentage uncertainty in some experiments; it does not remove every systematic effect. The answer should connect the apparatus, the measurement limitation and the change being proposed. Prepare with the skill expectations for the relevant unit, because Unit 6 develops the earlier practical work further.
Can a student join for only one Edexcel IAL unit?
Yes. Tuition can be aligned with a student's current Edexcel IAL Physics unit, including a unit being prepared again. Share the exact WPH code and intended sitting. Earlier knowledge is checked where it supports the target unit, because later assessments can build on IAS foundations.
A unit focus should not turn into a topic blind spot. For example, a WPH14 problem may need earlier force or energy reasoning as well as the new content. Bring marked work so the discussion can distinguish a missing prerequisite from a difficulty specific to the current unit.
Does Dr Desouky offer Cambridge A-Level Physics tutoring?

Check the unit code, specification and examination date against the course you are studying. The International Physics course taught here uses WPH11–WPH16. A paper labelled Edexcel A-Level may belong to UK GCE or an older specification, so the title alone is not enough to confirm its coverage.
For an older question used as topic practice, check that the concept and expected depth still match the current specification.
