Private Physics tutor, tuition centre or online group: how to choose

Individual tuition, a classroom group and an online group can each be useful. The right choice depends on the student’s gaps, concentration, timetable and the support the provider actually offers.
Compare specific lessons rather than assuming that every centre, private tutor or online course works the same way. This guide comes from Dr Desouky Physics Academy, which provides in-person Physics lessons in Abu Dhabi and live online group tuition.
Individual tutoring: check how the lesson will be adapted
One-to-one teaching can focus on a particular student’s questions and pace. That can help when a student needs to rebuild prerequisites or work on a specific obstacle before joining a group.
Ask for a plan based on recent work: which misconception will be addressed, what the student will practise independently and how progress will be checked. Individual attention alone does not tell you whether the tutor knows the correct specification or prepares practical and written questions well. Confirm fees, lesson length and the tutor’s availability directly.
A tuition centre or classroom group: check the actual class
A classroom provides a shared physical setting and can suit a student who concentrates better away from home. The journey, finishing time and other school commitments still need to fit the week.
Ask who teaches the class, which board it follows, how large the group is and how students receive feedback. Different centres offer different arrangements; size, quality and continuity should be checked with the provider rather than assumed from the format.
An online group: check participation and catch-up
An online group removes the journey to a classroom and can connect students in different cities studying the same course. A student needs a reliable connection, a suitable place to work and a way to participate in the live lesson.
Ask how questions are handled during and between sessions. If recordings are included, plan time to use them: pausing to attempt a problem is more useful than replaying a lesson without doing any work. Confirm group size and which missed material a new student would need to catch up on.
The academy’s current group offer
Dr Desouky’s live online group sessions cost AED 150 for 90 minutes, with around 20 students per group. Students who join the group receive recorded sessions to help them catch up. Parents can contact Dr Desouky with questions and are kept informed.
Timetables differ by exam board. Physics teaching covers Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE, and Edexcel International AS and A-Level. In-person Physics sessions take place in Khalidiya near Abu Dhabi Corniche; ask directly about their timetable and fees. Dubai and Sharjah students can join the live online groups.
Compare a realistic week before deciding
Write down the lesson time, travel if applicable, homework time and any catch-up work. Compare the total commitment and support, as well as the headline session price.
Use a recent marked question to explain the student’s needs. After starting lessons, check whether the student can solve a new question independently and explain why the method works. That gives a more useful conversation about progress than counting attendance alone.

How do I choose a tuition format when my child is behind the group?
Start by identifying the missing prerequisites and the group's current topic. Ask how those gaps would be repaired alongside the regular lessons. A group may fit if the catch-up is manageable; more individual support may be useful when the student needs a different pace or sequence.
For example, a student who has missed one waves lesson has a different need from a student who cannot rearrange equations used throughout the course. Compare a specific catch-up plan, the time the student can commit and how understanding will be checked. How can I compare tuition costs fairly across different lesson formats?
Compare the same period of study and include lesson length, frequency, travel, catch-up work and the support actually included. A lower session price does not automatically mean lower weekly cost or a better fit. Confirm the current offer before calculating the total.

How should we judge whether a tuition arrangement is helping?
Agree a small number of learning targets and check them with fresh work after a reasonable study period. Look for clearer explanations, more independent calculations and fewer repeated errors. Attendance and completed pages show activity, but they do not by themselves demonstrate understanding.
A target such as 'choose the correct equation in a mixed electricity set' is easier to assess than 'be more confident'. Keep the first attempt, feedback and a later unseen question together. If progress is limited, discuss whether the obstacle is missing prerequisites, insufficient practice, the lesson pace or another constraint. This creates a useful conversation about adjusting support rather than judging the entire arrangement from one test score.
