IGCSE vs GCSE Physics: what changes when you choose or switch courses?
The useful question is not whether the letter I makes Physics harder. It is whether your lessons, revision resources and examination entry all describe the same qualification. A strong explanation of electrical resistance can help students on several courses; a list claiming to cover everything for Paper 2 usually cannot.
This comparison helps students choosing between schools, moving countries or discovering that their revision book says GCSE while their entry says International GCSE. Start with the qualification code, not the textbook cover
Write down the awarding body, subject title, qualification code and examination year. Cambridge 0625, Cambridge 0972, Edexcel International GCSE 4PH1 and Edexcel modular 4XPH1 are different entries. A UK Edexcel GCSE Physics specification is another course again. The publisher's name alone does not identify which one you take.
Ask the school to confirm this information if your timetable simply says Physics. Then download the current specification from the awarding body. Keep a one-page course identity sheet at the front of your revision folder. This small check prevents substantial wasted practice on the wrong paper format, omitted topics or an inappropriate grade scale.
Compare demand using tasks you actually need to perform
A course may feel harder because it contains unfamiliar topics, longer explanations, different mathematical steps or a new examination format. Those are separate issues. Compare one appropriate calculation, one written explanation and one practical question from each specification rather than judging by a difficult-looking page or a friend's grade.
For example, a force calculation can require the same F = ma relationship on both courses. The difference may be whether you first find the resultant force, interpret a graph or explain why the model is approximate. Practise the missing step specifically. Comparable qualification level does not mean every question or topic is interchangeable.
Check practical assessment and tier arrangements separately
Cambridge IGCSE Physics offers a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper within its assessment structure. Edexcel International GCSE Physics assesses practical understanding through its written examinations. GCSE practical arrangements must be checked against the relevant GCSE specification. Never assume that using written practical questions removes the need to understand apparatus and measurements.
Similarly, Cambridge Core and Extended labels do not transfer automatically to another board's Foundation and Higher tiers. Edexcel International GCSE Physics is untiered. If your school changes your course, ask which content and grade range the new entry allows, then check this against your intended next course's admission requirements.
Build a transfer checklist when changing schools
Make three columns on paper: secure on both courses, familiar but assessed differently, and not yet taught. Put individual skills in the columns, such as interpreting speed–time graphs or explaining electromagnetic induction. Broad headings such as mechanics conceal gaps because two courses can use the same heading for different depth or coverage.
A student moving mid-course might understand circuits well but lack experience answering experimental planning questions. Their first priority is not to rewrite all circuit notes. They should solve a short diagnostic, learn the missing practical language, and practise the destination course's question style. Ask the new teacher to check the checklist before setting a completion date.
Use resources in three layers
Your first layer is the official specification, specimen material and papers for the exact course. Your second is a matching textbook or notes collection that helps explain those objectives. Your third can include another board's video or question if you have checked that its physics, mathematical level and conventions fit the task you are studying.
Label borrowed questions as extra practice rather than treating their total score as a prediction of your grade. Do not use another qualification's grade boundaries to convert that score. If a resource introduces material outside your course, decide deliberately whether it is useful enrichment or a distraction from an unfinished requirement.
Make the choice around support and progression
For a genuine choice between available courses, compare teaching support, timetable, access to practical learning, examination centre availability and the requirements of your next school. Ask for written confirmation of accepted qualifications and minimum grades. An internet claim that every sixth form prefers one course is too broad to guide an individual decision.
Finish with an action you can verify: identify your course, attempt a small mixed diagnostic, and select the first two gaps that matter for your new assessment. Good preparation is evidence that you can solve and explain the relevant physics. A prestigious-sounding resource title or a large folder of unrelated papers is not that evidence.

Is IGCSE Physics harder than GCSE Physics?
There is no useful universal ranking. Compare the exact specifications, mathematical demands, assessment format and your current skills. A familiar course with strong teaching may feel easier than a different course at a comparable level. Diagnose the questions you cannot yet answer rather than choosing from the qualification name alone.
Can I use GCSE Physics notes for IGCSE?
Use them for a matching concept after checking your IGCSE specification. They may explain energy or circuits well but omit an IGCSE objective or use a different practical framework. Keep a specification checklist and use resources for your exact qualification to judge completeness.
Can I switch from GCSE to IGCSE Physics halfway through?
A switch depends on the school's teaching arrangements and the examination centre's entry options. Before changing, compare taught content, remaining practical preparation, dates and admission requirements for your next course. Ask a teacher to review a topic-by-topic gap list rather than assuming your existing grades transfer directly.
Does IGCSE Physics always use A* to G grades?
No. Cambridge 0625 uses A*–G, while Cambridge 0972 and Edexcel International GCSE Physics use 9–1 grading. Check the qualification code on your entry. The word IGCSE alone does not identify the grading system, tier or examination papers.
Can either GCSE or IGCSE Physics lead to A-Level Physics?
Both can support progression, but the receiving school sets its subject and grade requirements. Check the actual course's published entry criteria, including Mathematics and any requirements concerning separate or combined science. Do not infer acceptance from a general comparison article.
