IGCSE Physics Paper 6: why students lose marks on experiments they understand

Every results season, the same message arrives: a strong student, an A on the theory papers, and a Paper 6 mark that dragged the grade down. The student is confused — they understood every experiment on that paper.
Paper 6 assesses experimental skills in writing: planning, measuring, interpreting data and evaluating methods. Understanding the experiment is essential, and your answer must make that understanding clear. This guide applies to the Cambridge Alternative to Practical route, not Edexcel paper numbering.
What Paper 6 actually tests
The syllabus sets out a range of experimental skills, including selecting apparatus, identifying variables, taking and recording measurements, presenting data, drawing conclusions and evaluating methods. Practise these skills in different contexts rather than memorising one script for each experiment.
Start with your school practical work and the official assessment materials. After attempting a question, identify the skill being assessed and explain why the proposed method or improvement would help that experiment.
The language rules that earn marks
Name the quantity, instrument or practical action you mean. For example, identify the actual control variable rather than writing “keep everything the same”. Repeating and averaging measurements can help with random variation, but will not fix a zero error or another systematic problem.
Read the question before choosing a response. An improvement should address a limitation of that particular method; a memorised phrase may be irrelevant even when it sounds scientific.
Name the practical action and explain why it helps this experiment.
Practise graph technique and interpretation
Label axes with quantities and units, choose suitable scales, plot accurately and draw a line or curve of best fit as required. Practise interpreting the trend and calculating a gradient using a large triangle. Follow the precision and tolerance required by the question rather than applying one universal measurement rule.
How to prepare in four weeks
Choose published Paper 6 questions that match your current syllabus. Attempt them before checking the scheme, record the practical skills you need to improve and then try a fresh context.
