How many IGCSE Physics papers are there? Find your exact exam route
A folder containing Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 4 and Paper 6 does not mean you must sit all four. Those numbers can belong to different boards, tiers or alternative assessment routes. Start with your statement of entry or school confirmation before building a past-paper schedule.
This guide is a routing checklist, not an examination timetable. Exact dates, sessions, venues and local entry arrangements must come from your centre. Once the route is clear, you can plan balanced practice and stop spending time on papers that do not represent your assessment.
Cambridge: three papers, with choices built into the route
For the Cambridge 0625 assessment described in the 2026–2028 syllabus, Core students take Papers 1 and 3, plus either Paper 5 or Paper 6. Extended students take Papers 2 and 4, plus either Paper 5 or Paper 6. The final practical component is a choice within the entry, so students do not normally prepare to sit both alternatives.
This explains why a collection of Cambridge papers has six main numbers while an individual student takes three. The 0972 qualification follows the corresponding assessment structure with a different grading scale. Always confirm your precise syllabus and tier with the centre instead of inferring them from whichever practice paper a friend shares.
Edexcel linear: two papers for separate Physics
Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1 is assessed through Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both are written papers, and practical understanding is assessed within them. Paper 2 does not simply mean Cambridge Extended multiple choice: that is a different board's numbering system. The same number can represent a completely different assessment task.
Check whether you take separate Physics or Science Double Award before collecting papers. A Double Award Physics component does not by itself represent the standalone Physics qualification. Keep the full code beside each practice score so that your progress record never mixes different courses or claims a grade from an incomplete set.
Edexcel modular: distinguish unit entries from paper labels
Edexcel modular International GCSE Physics 4XPH1 divides assessment into Unit 1 and Unit 2, with unit codes 4WPH1 and 4WPH2. These units are not interchangeable with the linear qualification's Paper 1 and Paper 2. Use the modular specification's content allocation when choosing questions and planning when to study each topic.
The modular route can spread assessment across permitted examination opportunities, subject to your centre's arrangements. Do not read two units as a promise that you can take an examination whenever you want. Ask the centre to confirm available series, registration requirements and how the overall award will be requested.
Decode a Cambridge component number carefully
A Cambridge component code such as 42 contains a paper number and a variant identifier. It does not mean Paper 42 is a forty-second examination. The paper number identifies the type of assessment; the variant helps identify the version allocated within the examination arrangements. Use the version stated on your entry and timetable.
For revision, a suitable variant can provide additional practice when it matches the current syllabus and paper type. Keep its exact year, series and component in your record so you can find the matching mark scheme. Never treat a filename from an unofficial upload as confirmation of your own examination entry.
Turn the route into a balanced practice plan
Give every assessed skill a place in your schedule. A Cambridge Extended student who completes only multiple-choice papers has not checked their written explanations or experimental planning. An Edexcel student who avoids practical questions because there is no separate practical exam has the same underlying gap.
Start with a short diagnostic from each relevant assessment type. Record whether marks were lost through content, interpretation, calculation, explanation or practical reasoning. Choose the next practice task from that evidence. Equal numbers of papers are not automatically the best allocation; a neglected skill may need targeted teaching before another whole-paper attempt.
Use a final entry checklist before the exam period
Copy the board, syllabus code, assessment route, components or units, venue and confirmed date into one checklist. Compare it with the centre's official documents and flag any mismatch immediately. If your revision materials show a different code, ask whether they are deliberate extra practice or the wrong course.
Keep useful logistics separate from revision predictions. A confirmed paper list tells you what you must attend; it does not reveal which topics will appear. Continue to cover the required specification and practise mixed questions. The safest final plan is complete across your actual assessment route, with extra attention to the weaknesses your own work reveals.

Do Cambridge IGCSE Physics students take six papers?
