What is IGCSE Physics? Topics, exam routes and how to start

By

Physics asks how you can describe, predict and test what happens in the physical world. At IGCSE, that might mean explaining why an object accelerates, calculating electrical power or deciding whether experimental results support a conclusion. The subject combines explanations, mathematics, diagrams and measurement.

The course title is only the beginning. 'IGCSE Physics' can refer to different specifications and paper structures. This guide gives a broad starting point, then shows how to identify Cambridge 0625 or 0972, Edexcel linear 4PH1, or Edexcel modular 4XPH1 without treating them as the same exam.

What do you actually learn?

Common areas include motion and forces; transfers and stores of energy; thermal behaviour and matter; waves, light and sound; electricity and magnetism; nuclear processes; and space-related ideas. The organisation and precise depth vary by specification. A chapter title is therefore a starting label, not proof that two courses require exactly the same material.

Each area has several kinds of learning. Electricity includes quantities such as current and voltage, circuit models that relate them, calculations using those relationships, and ways to investigate them. A good set of notes helps you connect these parts. A list of equations without meanings, assumptions or practice is only one piece of the course.

What does a Physics question look like?

Consider an original example: a 12 V supply drives a current of 0.50 A through a device for 20 s. The power is P = VI = 12 × 0.50 = 6.0 W. The energy transferred is E = Pt = 6.0 × 20 = 120 J. The calculation connects the voltage and current to a rate of energy transfer, then uses the time to find the total energy.

A follow-up might ask how the energy changes if the time doubles while voltage and current remain constant. The answer is 240 J because the same power acts for twice as long. Another question might ask where to place meters in a circuit. These tasks show why understanding the setup and explaining a relationship matter alongside arithmetic.

Separate Physics is not the same as every science award

A separate Physics qualification gives a result in Physics. Combined or coordinated science programmes combine science subjects under their own qualification structures. The words 'triple', 'double' and 'combined' can be used loosely in school conversations, so ask for the official title and code rather than inferring the award from a timetable label.

If you are choosing subjects for progression, ask the intended sixth form which qualifications and grades it accepts for A-Level Physics. Requirements vary between institutions. Do not assume separate Physics is universally mandatory, or that every science award automatically meets every entry requirement. Keep the written admissions information with your options notes so your choice rests on the relevant policy.

Identify your board and assessment route

Cambridge 0625 uses letter grades; its 0972 counterpart uses numerical grades. Both require you to identify the appropriate syllabus and entry route. Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 is the linear separate Physics qualification, while 4XPH1 is the modular qualification. Linear paper numbers and modular unit numbers do not map directly onto each other.

Ask your teacher or exams officer for the qualification code, exam year, and the components or units you are entered for. Record all three in the front of your revision folder. When downloading a resource, compare those details with its cover. This simple check prevents a student from following a perfectly good guide to the wrong paper.

Practical skills remain part of learning Physics

You need to understand how observations and measurements support a conclusion. That includes choosing apparatus, identifying variables, recording values with units, drawing useful graphs and evaluating weaknesses in a method. Learn the reason for an instruction rather than a stock phrase: 'repeat and average' has a different role from correcting a zero offset.

In an original spring investigation, measure the unloaded length before calculating extension from the loaded length. Keep the same spring and take readings consistently. A graph of applied force against extension can show the region where they are proportional. A sensible evaluation names a specific limitation and a feasible improvement. Your course determines how these skills are assessed, but they belong in the learning throughout.

What should your first study resources include?

Use the current official syllabus or specification as the coverage checklist, a clear set of topic notes for understanding, and questions that let you apply the ideas independently. Include access to feedback or solutions you can understand. More websites are not automatically more useful: if every source gives a different chapter order, you may spend more time organising than learning.

Make one topic folder with a short summary, a worked example, your own attempted question and a correction. Label the board and topic scope. For the electrical example above, your summary should distinguish power from energy and your correction should explain any wrong equation or unit. A folder should contain evidence of learning, not simply a collection of downloaded pages.

A practical starting plan for students and parents

First confirm the course code. Next choose a topic already being taught and attempt a small task without notes. Use the result to decide whether you need an explanation, mathematical practice or feedback on wording. Keep a later question unseen so that you can check whether the correction transfers to a fresh situation.

If you want structured teaching, compare a course with your exact qualification and needs. Ask about lesson format, homework feedback and catching up after an absence. What does IGCSE Physics stand for?

IGCSE means International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Physics is the subject qualification concerned with physical principles and their applications. Pearson uses the title International GCSE. To identify the exact course, use its awarding organisation and qualification code as well as the subject name.

Is IGCSE Physics mostly memorising equations?

No. Equations are tools for modelling a situation. You also need to identify relevant quantities, convert units, interpret graphs and diagrams, explain physical changes and reason about experiments. A useful self-check is to explain why an equation applies and predict a change before calculating a number.

Do I need separate IGCSE Physics to study A-Level Physics?

Check the entry policy of the school or college offering your next course. Some institutions accept specified combined-science qualifications alongside suitable Maths grades; others set different conditions. Ask for the accepted qualification titles and grades. Do not treat a general subject guide as a substitute for that institution's admissions requirements.

How do I find out which IGCSE Physics course I am taking?

Ask your teacher or exams officer for the awarding body, qualification code, syllabus year and component or unit entries. A statement of entry is useful when available. The words Cambridge, Edexcel, Paper 1 or Unit 1 alone do not give enough information to choose every resource accurately.
